Globe G12 Slicer Materials & Design

The unit is made of stainless steel and anodized aluminum with some plastic components. The exterior is hard chromed, which ensures excellent performance, durability, and resistance to rust. Hard chrome is known as engineered or industrial chrome and it is also used to increase abrasion tolerance and general resistance to normal wear & tear. The plating is extremely hard, usually ranging between 65 and 69 HRC, and much thicker than decorative chrome. Plating an appliance with such a material, however, raises its final price.

According to the manufacturer, the unit is made of a “special alloy,” but there are no details concerning the actual compound percentages in the materials used to build the unit.  

The stainless steel blade features a hollow grind, which means that it has been ground to feature a characteristic beveled, concave surface behind the actual cutting edge. The final result is a razor-sharp but rather weak edge that requires constant maintenance. This is why the unit comes with a fully removable sharpener that features 2 grinding stones used to automatically re-sharpen the blade.

The motor dishes out ½ hp, which roughly translates to 3 A, depending on the input power. The unit operates on 115 V and 60 Hz and the wattage is 345. It features a 6-foot power cord and a NEMA 5-15P plug. The motor is protected from thermal overloading and also comes with a manual reset switch. As we already mentioned in this Globe G12 Slicer review, the blade is belt-driven with an oversized positive traction grooved belt drive.  

Angled at 35°, the food chute slides effortlessly because of the smooth stainless steel ball bearings. It is very spacious and can accommodate products up to 10 x 8.25 x 10.25 inches in size. The reliable extended grip will keep even the longest products firmly in place thanks to a set of pyramid-shaped teeth located on the end weight. The dual-purpose handle features an improved ergonomic design for optimal comfort and reliability.  

Globe G12 Slicer offers 15 different thickness settings, ranging from the thinnest slices to 0.6-inch cuts. The bottom of the base is encased in metal for extra protection and features an ON/OFF switch with a protective cover that prevents potential damage from excess juices.  

The unit measures 17 x 22.25 x 19.25 (HWD) and weighs close to 50 pounds. It is held firmly in place by 4 non-slip feet.

As we already mentioned in this Globe G12 Slicer review, the unit is primarily designed for mid-tier commercial use, which implies it requires a certain level of expertise for optimal and safe usage. Meat slicers are inherently very dangerous appliances that could cause major injuries if not handled with care.  

The slicer is pretty easy to assemble following the provided instruction manual. Once all of the essential components are in place, make sure the unit is turned off (the power indicator light is not illuminated) before actually placing the food product into the chute. Pull the food chute all the way toward yourself and place the food you are about to slice into it. Swing the end weight into position to secure the product in place. Note that Globe G12 Slicer is not designed to cut bones and unfrozen foods.  

Select your desired thickness setting by rotating the dial counter-clockwise and start slicing the meat or cheese. Once the slicing is done, rotate the dial clockwise until it stops to close the slicer table. Globe G12 Slicer is a manual electric unit, which means there is no setting can enable the chute to run automatically without your input. 

For such a complex piece of meat-slicing machinery, Globe G12 is extremely easy to clean using a soft cloth and some mild soap. The slice deflector, food chute, top-mounted sharpener, and blade cover are easily removed and the smooth construction with seamless edges leaves no crevices that could get filled with food. Note that you should clean and sanitize the unit before and up to 4 hours after each use. The manufacturer recommends using iodine, chlorine or quaternary ammonium chemical sanitizers.  

Never pressure wash, hose down or pour water directly on the slicer. You should also never clean it with steel wool, scrubber pads or any other highly abrasive materials. The manufacturer does not recommend using chemicals containing sodium hypochlorite, bleach or any other caustic detergents since they can discolor and destroy the base and the removable components.  

Globe G12 Slicer Performance & Versatility

As already stated in this Globe G12 Slicer review, the unit features a rather spacious food chute that can accommodate and slice even the longest of food products. The round dial allows you to adjust the thickness of the slices ranging from 0 to 0.6 inches.  The ½ hp motor unit has more than enough power to slice through pretty much anything, but the unit should not be used to cut bones or frozen foods since they can damage the blade beyond repair.  

The unit can be operated for up to 4 hours per day for slicing meat and up to 2 hours for slicing cheese. The hollow ground blade is razor sharp, so it can easily handle any type of boneless, unfrozen product.

Globe G12 Slicer Safety

First of all, the Globe G12 series of meat slicers come with an extended rod that allows you to slice longer food products and it also keeps your hand away from the blade at all times. The gripping teeth on the end weight will keep the product firmly in place and prevent any type of slipping mishaps. The knife cover interlock prevents the unit from running once the cover is removed. The thermal overload control prevents the slicer from overworking the motor. The thermal control mechanism does come with a manual motor reset, but we do not recommend using it often.  

The unit has a no-volt release switch, which is a relay implemented into the mechanism to prevent the unit from auto-starting in case of a power outage. In other words, once the power comes back, you will have to press the OFF and then ON button again in order to restart the machine.  

Globe G12 Slicer meets the electrical product safety and sanitation requirements set by the ETL for use in the US and Canada. The stainless steel paired with anodized aluminum is not a fertile ground for bacteria growth and the smooth seamless edges provide no crevices for the food to get stuck in.  

As we already mentioned in this Globe G12 Slicer review, the unit should be sanitized and thoroughly cleaned before and after each use for optimal performance and food hygiene. Some of the components should also be oiled up periodically to prevent oxidation. The slicer features splash covers that prevent food particles and excess juices from getting anywhere near the motor unit or the belt and ending their lifespans prematurely.
