GRILLHOGS Meat Injector Materials, Design & Accessories
In terms of overall material quality, GRILLHOGS Meat Injector does rather well since it is made of food-grade stainless steel. It features a simple design and it has an almost optimal weight. The 3-ring hand grip feels comfortable and allows for easy flow control. The injector barrel is large and the needles are pretty strong and reasonably sharp.
However, this injector has 2 significant drawbacks that diminish its functionality and durability. First, the silicone o-rings get worn out and break rather easily and the threads tend to disintegrate with prolonged use. These problems may result in leaks or even render the tool useless. Thus, while it is possible to happily use this injector for more than a year with no major problems, we feel that it is our duty to warn you that the above-mentioned issues are not that uncommon with this model.
The injector comes with 3 needles and 5 spare o-rings. Two of the needles measure 6 inches in length and 0.2 inches in diameter. One of them features a wide open tip while the other is a 12-hole needle for quicker and easier dispersion. The third needle measures 3 inches in length and 0.1 inches in diameter and features 2 holes. It is best suited for thinner cuts.
GRILLHOGS Meat Injector Performance
GRILLHOGS Meat Injector is easy to use, but many users get confused by the misleading description provided by the manufacturer. Namely, the manufacturer claims that the barrel features a removable lid for easy filling. The truth is that the removable lid facilitates cleaning. If you try to remove the lid and pour the marinade through the opening on the barrel, the marinade will come pouring out of the needle.
To properly fill the barrel, you should install the 6-inch open-tip needle, dip its tip into the marinade, and pull on the plunger to let the marinade flow into the barrel. Then, all you need to do is lift the needle, insert it into the meat, and push the plunger gently while slowly removing the needle. You can switch to a different needle, but only after filling the barrel. If you follow these simple steps, you should have no problem using the injector.
As far as the injector’s performance goes, it is more than satisfactory. The maximum penetration depth of 6 inches makes the injector suitable for larger, thicker cuts. The 6-inch open-tip needle is great for marinades with fine herbs and spices, the 12-hole needle evenly distributes liquid-only flavoring solutions, and the 3-inch precision needle is a great choice for liquid-only marinades and steaks and chops. Clogging is not an issue, as long as you do not use chunky marinades. The barrel does not have to be refilled frequently due to its above-average 2-ounce capacity.
The injector works well with virtually all types of meat, although particularly tough game meat may represent a challenge. It can be used for pastry filling, but be sure not to use exceedingly hot filling sauces since they may damage the injector.
GRILLHOGS Meat Injector Maintenance
According to the manufacturer, GRILLHOGS Meat Injector is dishwasher-safe. Thus, if you hate hand-washing your kitchen tools, you can just throw the parts into the dishwasher after use. However, if you want the injector to last, it is better to hand-wash it in warm water and soap or at least avoid putting the o-rings into the dishwasher. You may need to get some cleaning brushes to properly clean the needles.
Be sure all the parts are completely dry before reassembling. It is also wise to coat the o-rings with cooking oil after cleaning since this helps the plunger move smoothly.
